Split Gum Envelopes in Direct Mail Marketing Never use full gum on envelope flaps. This may make the envelopes too difficult to open and deter the customer away from reading the contents. It also may lead to the actual mailer inside being ripped in a potential customer's attempt to open the envelope. Instead of full gum, it's best to use split gum. Split gum, or small areas of gum, do not cover the entire envelope and are generally easier to open. This is the best way to go when it comes to envelopes for direct mail. They are easier to open and cause little problems.
